Munk - Happiness Juice

On continue notre série sur l'été en vous parlant aujourd'hui d'un petit cocktail musical qui nous a pas mal séduit. C'est frais, acidulé, ça explose en bouche! Il faut dire qu'on a l'habitude d'être régalé avec Munk, allemand vivant à Marseille qui nous offre ici une alliance très sympa de new-disco berlinois et de détente provençale.

Un mois avant la sortie de son EP le 25 août, le patron du label Gomma a assorti le premier extrait de son prochain EP, Happiness Juice, d'un clip coloré qui rend l'attente compliquée!

Let's continue to talk about summer. Here is the cool musical cocktail we were just waiting for this summer. It's fresh, sweet and refreshing! Munk, a German artist living un Marseille is familiar with this kind of dancing Nu-Disco and perfectly mixes sounds from Berlin with the provencal way of life.

Here is a colored video that will make difficult to wait for the release of his next EP, Happiness Juice, on the 25th of August!

A little of airiness with Evil Eyes, a 2-piece band from San Francisco. Greg Mabry & Joe Frabotta release this month a nice and refreshing 7” vinyl with two dream pop tracks: Over My Shoulder and Playing With Matches. Hard to say which song is the best one.

The KDMS - Kinky Dramas and Magic Stories

Il y a un an on découvrait avec délice Tonight des KDMS leur clip retro-décadent façon la chute. On s'en souvient comme si c'était hier... il faut dire que le groupe, signé par l'excellent label allemand Gomma, connait la recette pour nous donner envie de bouger. 

Il y a d'abord cette bonne basse, obsédante, omniprésente qui n'a rien à envier à celle des Whispers. Et puis il y a la voix entraînante de la Diva Kathy Diamond qui se pose parfaitement dessus. 

Bref on va pas s'étendre, juste souligner que des bon disco en ce moment c'est assez rare et ça vaut le coup de prêter l'oreille!

One year ago we were delightfully enjoying the KDMS with their song tonight and its retro-decadent clip for the first time. We still remember that time as if it was yesterday... Actually it is not surprising as the band is produced by the excellent German label, Gomma. 

Those guys perfectly know how to make us shake. First there is that obsessing and omnipresent bass guitar comparable to the one of the Whispers. Then there is Kathy Diamond's diva voice that perfectly fits. 

Anyway, no need to talk more about it. It's just another Disco record that is worth listening and it's quite rare in 2012!

The Yolks - Bossy Lady

The Yolks c'est le genre de groupe qu'on aime! Le type de groupe qui a été nourri au revival rock des années 2000, à son énergie et qui a décidé de sortir un bon vieux synthé du grenier pour apporter un peu de fluo à tout ça. Le résultat est assez cool: riffs endiablés et lignes de synthé façon console de jeux.

Il y a quelque chose à la House de Racket dans le second EP des parisiens,  Bossy Lady. Peut-être le rythme ce flegme qu'on retrouve dans les groupes de rock français qui chantent dans la langue de Shakespeare. L'EP au sonorités 70's et 80's nous raconte l'histoire de la Lady à travers les 4 chansons qui explorent chacune un thème différent.

Du coup on se verrait bien la rencontrer sous une boule à facette un cuba libre à la main!

The Yolks is the type of band we like! The kind of band that has been fed with 2000's rock revival sounds, its energy and has decided one day to take an old synthesizer out of the cave to bring fluorescent craziness to their music. The result is quite cool: furious riffs coupled with video game samples. 

There something sounding like House de Racket in the Parisians' second EP, Bossy Lady. Maybe is it the way French Rock bands sing their music in English. The record drives us into the 70's and the 80's and tell us the story of the Lady through 4 different tracks exploring various themes. 

We just wish we could meet her under a disoc ball and drinking a Cuba Libre!

Tobtok - Electric Horror

Le visuel de Tobtok nous en dit déjà pas mal sur sa musique... c'est plutôt l'éléctro rétro. Ce jeune Suédois d'à peine 18 ans réussit une synthèse surprenantes des 70's, 80's et 90's guidé par son amour du disco et de la dance. Tobias l'affirme bien volontiers, une de ses influences majeures c'est la House française et en particulier Daft Punk. 

Tout ça se voit! sa musique dégage une joie de vivre, un enthousiasme frappant à l'image de Electric Horror, sa dernière piste. Difficile de rester en place plus de 10 secondes. Comme si le jeune nordique avait réussi à capter une partie de l'énergie des 30 dernières années.

Le titre Pressure est lui, un bon exemple du melting pot qu'est la musique de Tobtok: une intro qui sonne terriblement 90's, puis des samples disco vont se poser sur des synthés bien italos. I'll Never Forget You a une coloration plus 80's

Looking at it its picture we already have an idea of Tobtok's music... it is quite retro and electronic. This young 18 Swedish guy makes an awesome synthesis of the 70's, the 80's and the 90's based on his love for Disco and Dance. Tobias affirms that an important influence for him is French House and especially Daft Punk.

And we see that! his music is full of joy and enthusiasm such as Electric Horror, his last song. It is difficult to stay calm for more than 10 seconds. It is like the young Nordic has succeeded in capturing a part of the energy released during the last 30 years.

Pressure is a good example of the Melting-Pot offered by Tobtok: an intro sounding so 90's and then, Disco samples on Italo-disco synthesizers. I'll Never Forget You sounds typically 80's

Bon Voyage - Sorciers Des Aeroports

Peu ou pas d’information sur ce groupe : Bon Voyage, une bonne découverte. 

Ils sont trois, venant de Paris et semblent savoir comment utiliser leurs instruments. Les chansons de Bon Voyage racontent des histoires, ou plutôt vous invitent à créer votre propre scénario : Une femme, dans un aéroport, attendant… 

Un premier EP, Sorciers Des Aéroports vient de sortir. 

Plus ou moins rythmé, comme dans Trajectoires, ou atmosphérique, comme dans Commision Rogatoire, leur musique se déroule comme un BO d’un film des années 70 avec de bon synthétiseurs . Un brin mystérieux, ce projet, plein de personnalité et détonnant avec la musique actuelle risque de faire parler de lui. 

Bon voyage, ou comme le dit le groupe lui-même cчастливого пути !

They are three, coming from Paris and they seems to know how to use their instruments. Bon voyage’s songs tell stories, or invite us create your own story: A girl in an airport waiting for… 

A first EP, Sorciers Des Aéroports has just been released.

More or less rhythmical, as in Trajectoires, or atmospheric as in Commision Rogatoire, the music is emerging as a soundtrack of a 70s movie with nice synthesizers. A bit mysterious, this project, full of personality and different of what we are used to listen, may not stay unknown.

Midnight Magic - What The Eyes Can't See

Décidemment, on donnne dans la magie en ce moment! Après le titre de The Magician, c'est l'ensemble disco funk Midnight Magic qui vient de sortir son Debut EP, What the Eyes Can't See. Les 9 New-Yorkais de Brooklin nous font redecouvrir le bon vieux groove des années 70-80, cuivres et lignes de basses en tête. Ils s'étaient déjà fait remarquer il y a un peu plus d'un an avec le titre Beam me up.

Le tout est kitsch à souhait, les sons sont fidèles et surtout le timbre de la chanteuse exceptionnel ce qui en rend l'écoute vraiment agréable. Bon, il y a quelques longeurs et l'EP manque peut-être un peu d'originalité mais le plaisir de renouer avec le Disco et la générosité du groupe, qui nous offrent les titres en téléchargement gratuit, compensent largement.

At Vocododo we definitely decided to deal with magic! After the Magician's song, here is the Disco funk band Midnight Magic that is releasing its Debut EP, What the Eyes Can't See. The 9 New-Yorkers from Brooklin play good old Groove from the 70's-80's with pleasant Trumpets and Basslines. They have already been noticed last year with the Beam me up that have been remixed several times.

The result is Kitsch, sounds are reliable and the voice of the singer is particularly astonishing. All these points make the release really pleasant to listen. Ok, there are some longs and the EP could have been a bit more original. But in fact it is so so enjoyable to discover disco again and the songs can be downloaded for free!
