Else - Pacific EP

Breakbot - By Your Side

Behind his very calm attitude and his unkempt beard, you will find a talented guy belonging to the French electro landscape. Thibaut Berland, better known by his stage name Breakbot, was giving a DJ set in LA last week, in Paris yesterday, and will be in London tomorrow. A musical phenomenon is born around this particular DJ.

He studied at a computer graphics university and will begin as graphic designer for different artists such as Luc Besson or the French electro band Justice for their album Cross in 2007.

Breakbot will begin his musical career with remixes of Metronomy, MGMT, Justice, Yuksek, Chromeo, or Sebastien Tellier. Afterwards, these artists will directly ask Breakbot to mix some of their releases.

In 2009, he joins the recording label Ed Banger Records, thus surrounded by French DJs like Busy P, Mr Oizo, Justice, DJ Mehdi, or SebastiAn. His second maxi, the famous “Baby I’m yours EP” with Irfane, Outline’s singer, will be played in all clubs during summer 2010. Breakbot then appears as the upcoming new talented DJ on the French electro scene. The video clip – directed by his girlfriend Irina Dakeva – is made up of 2000 watercolors and will confirm that Breakbot’s gift is not only on the turntable. In fact, he managed to create an actual atmosphere, concept beyond his own music.

Breakbot’s great gift is this ability to handcraft a subtle mix of styles that are supposed to be totally opposed. Without any problem, he will be able to skip from Justice to Donna Summer, and then to sample 10 seconds of the Brothers Johnson. Breakbot rejuvenates vinyls, innovates with vintage sounds, creates with oldies. His influences come from the 70s and 80s disco-funk, but also hip hop, as we can hear it in his “Annie Mac 5 min mix”. Thibaut Berland doesn’t consider himself as an electro DJ since so many different styles are mingled together in his music.

When he was asked in 2008 the date of his first album, he answered, laughing: “not before 2017, or 2018!”. “By your Side”, his first album, was released last Monday with a funny sleeve looking like a chocolate bar.

The French electro music was described as this famous “French Touch” in the 1990s with artists such as Daft Punk, Etienne de Crecy, Cassius, Stardust, or Dimitri From Paris. The creativity and the sound quality offered by Breakbot and his Ed Banger-fellows enable us to keep on listening to good sounds mainly stemming from funk and disco music.
