Juveniles - We Are young EP

Oui il est encore possible de Faire de la Synth-pop de qualité en France! C'est ce que nous prouvent les Bretons de Juveniles avec leur début EP de cet été "We Are Young". Ils ont beau être jeunes, les Rennais savent d'où ils viennent, ils ont piqué quelques disques à leurs grands frères des 80's... Le chanteur a comme un air de Morrissey,  les synthés vintages sont à la base de leur sons.

Les titres de l'EP osscillent entre l'hymne New-Wave et retro-futuriste (We are Young, Avant garde is French for Bullshit), des titres plus punchy typés electro-Rock (Nights Nights). Les Bretons apportent à ça une sacré fraicheur et une grosse dose d'énergie.

Le groupe va tourner avec Yelle dont ils ont déjà remixé un titre avec Talent (Comme un enfant).

Yes that is still possible to make quality Synt-pop in France! That is what shows Juveniles from Brittany with their Debut EP that has been released at the beginning of summer, "We Are Young". Ok they are young but they know where they are from. They should have heard their big brothers from the 80's disks... The singer sings a bit like Morrissey, synthesizers are everywhere in their music.

There songs are sometimes like New-Wave and Retro-Futurist Anthems (We Are young, Avant garde is French for Bullshit) sometimes more punchy and electro-Rock (Nights Nights). The guys from Rennes also bring a huge amount of freshness and energy.

In addition they are touring with Yelle and have already remixed one of her songs (Comme un enfant).

Kidstreet - Fuh Yeah

L'hiver approche, bon moment pour faire le plein de forces avant le grand froid... Et question hiver rigoureux, les Canadiens de Kidstreet en connaissent un rayon. Dans leur premier LP, Fuh Yeah, ils nous proposent toute un gamme de vitamines pour nous permettre de tenir...

La chose qui marque le plus dans Fuh Yeah c'est sans doute l'envie, la force qui s'en dégage.  Les tempos sont rapides, à la manière d'une bonne vieille techno 90's. Edna, la chanteuse est capable de chanter à une vitesse incroyable (Penny Candy, Birthday boy).

L'album varie entre hommages à la techno, la New Wave et l'expérimentation, présente partout. Du coup il est assez difficile de définir leur musique, on peut juste dire qu'elle appartient à la branche electro (et encore). Ca faisait longtemps qu'un album n'avait pas été aussi innovant, différent!

Alors on dance et forcement, on a moins froid... Merci les Sydner!

Winter is slowly coming and it is a good period to get full of vitamines before it becomes very cold... And concerning winter, we guess the Canadian from Kidstreet are familiar with cold. In their first LP, Fuh Yeah, they propose a lot of different sort of vitamines to enable us to endure winter....

What amazes us in their music is the strengh and the willingness that they communicate. Tempos are quick like a good old 90's techno. Edna, the singer is able to sing at an incredible speed (Penny Candy, Birthday boy).

The album is a mix between a tribute to disco and New Wave and experimentation that is present everywhere. Thus it is quite difficult to define it. We can only say that it belongs to the electro family (and still...). Wa haven't listen to such an innovative and different album for ages!

So we dance and of course we are less cold... Thanks you the Sydners!

May68 - White Lies

Attendu en principe pour le 17 octobre, le nouveau single du groupe d’électro rock May68 est déjà disponible sur le net depuis quelques jours. 

Si vous êtes habitués à écouter les compilations Kitsuné, vous avez déjà du entendre parler d’eux. My Way, titre typé 80’s assez punchy avait connu un certain succès l’année dernière. Le quintette anglais revient avec deux chansons. White Lies, la première, ressemble à ce que le groupe a déjà pu faire auparavant avec cependant une présence moins marqué de la voix de Judy Wainwright. 

Static est intéressant parce qu’il change des autres chansons de May68, avec un rythme plus doux et une chanteuse qui parle plus qu’elle ne chante. Il y a d’ailleurs une ressemblance avec le tube Fade To Grey, sorti par Visage en 1980. 

En attendant la sortie du premier album prévu pour le printemps prochain…

Due on the 17th of October, The new single of the electro rock band May68 has been available since last week. 

If you are familiar with Kitsuné compilations, you may have heard of them before. The punchy My Way has known a certain success last year. The English quintet is coming back with those two songs. White Lies, the first one, sounds like what the band has already done before but maybe with a less important presence of the vocals of Judy Wainwright. 

Static is interesting because it differs from the other songs, with a slower pace and thanks to the singer who is more speaking than singing. What we can notice is that there is a nice similitude with Visage’s Hit Fade to Grey released in 1980. 

In the Meantime of the first album scheduled for next spring…

Sons and Daughters - Mirror Mirror



Domino records aime le rock écossais! La maison de disque de Franz Ferdinand signe aussi le groupe de Glasgow Sons and Daughters qui vient de sortir son quatrième album, Mirror Mirror. La musique du quatuor, nous rappelle celle du début de la vague new wave, des basses incisives, de la guitare froide et sans concession.

Dans les chansons, l'energie, les mimiques de la chanteuse nous font penser à Lene Lovich. Le côté inquitant fait de l'oeil à Siouxsie and the branchee. Certaines chansons avec les voix entremêlées d'Adele Bethel et Scott Paterson ne sont pas sans rappeler certaines chansons des kills.

Le clip Rose Red, leur prochain single, a été tourné dans la campagne écossaises. Plusieurs éléments font références à des films d'horreurs connus. La video a été en partie inspiré par un fait divers des années 60, l'affaire "Bible John" d'où le côté angoissant.

 Le film est beau, bien réalisé, la musique elle manque peut-être un peu d'identité...

Domoni records Loves Scottish rock! the Franz Ferdinand's label also signed Sons and Daughters, another band from Glasgow that just released its fourth album, Mirror Mirror. The music of the quartet reminds us sounds from the beginning of the New Wave: incisive basses, cold and uncompromising guitar.

In the songs, the energie and the behaviour of the singer look a little bit like Lene Lovich's. The frightening ambiance refers to Siouxsie and the branchee. Some songs mixing the voices of Adele Bethel et Scott Paterson sound a bit like the Kills. 

The Rose Red clip, their last single, has been recorded in the Scottish country. there are some references to famous horros movies. The video has partly been inspired by a murderer, "Bible John", that explains the scarying ambiance.

The film is great, well recorded, the music maybe lacks identity..

The Narcoleptic Dancers - Never Sleep

Pourquoi faire compliquer lorsqu’on peut faire simple ? Voila peut être comment on pourrait résumer l’état d’esprit des Narcoleptic Dancers. 

Ce duo franco-néerlandais s’est rencontré au début des années 2000, Anton Louis Jr et Melody Van Kappers partageant les mêmes gouts musicaux mais aussi le même père, ils décident de fonder un groupe. Le nom Narcoleptic Dancers est choisi en hommage au papa, ancien joueur de football professionnel connu pour avoir une coupe de cheveux atypique. 

Apres un premier EP sortie l’année dernière, Never Sleep est leur premier album dont est extrait Rastakraut, le premier single. Leur musique est pop, douce, voire enfantine. Avec des accords de guitare simple, une voie paisible chantonnant des airs joyeux et un peu rétro, le groupe arrive à nous donner le sourire. Il s’inscrive dans cette vague Pop/Folk mené par Cocoon et sans être d’une grande originalité, leur fraicheur est très agréable.

Why complicate things when you can make them simple? This is maybe how we can sum up the state of mind of The Narcoleptic Dancers. 

This French-Dutch duo met ten years ago, Anton Louis Jr and Melody Van Kappers sharing the same musical tastes but also the same father decided to creat a band. The name Narcoleptic Dancers is chosen as a tribute to their dad, a former football player, known for his atypical haircut. 

After a first EP released last year, Never Sleep is their first album from where is extract Rastakraut, the first single. Their music is pop, soft, or maybe infantile. With simple guitar chords, and a peaceful voice humming joyful tunes, the band success in make us smile. They belong to this wave of Pop/Folk lead by Cocoon and without being very original, their freshness is nice.

Tammar - Visits

Tammar: "The Last Line" 

Tammar vient juste de sortir cette semaine, Visits, son premier album. C’est typiquement le genre de petit groupe qui ne fait pas beaucoup de bruit dans le monde de la musique, suivant paisiblement son propre chemin pour composer un rock plutôt personnel. Venant de la petite bourgade de Bloomington, Indiana, les cinq amis créaient un post punk aux influences shoegaze. 

Apres écoute, on peut dire que la chose la plus étonnante, c’est la longueur de chacune des chansons qui s’étirent parfois pendant plus de 8 minutes comme Arrows Under Water. La durée des pistes donnent un aspect hypnotique à la musique. Seulement 7 pistes, mais c’est intense. On pourrait aussi dire que ce coté expérimental a été influencé par des groupes comme Neu! ou le Krautrock en général. Il n’est pas impossible que le groupe arrive à se tailler une place dans cette niche du rock.

Tammar just released his first album Visits this week. Tammar is the kind of band which doesn’t make a lot of noise in the world of music, following his own way by inventing a very personal rock. Coming from the little city of Bloomington, Indiana, The five friends create a shoegazing post punk, something which can be described as dynamic space music. 

The most astonishing thing is the length of each song, for example Arrows Under Water (8:36). Far away from commercial road, this duration give a kind of hypnotic aspect to the music. So, there are just seven tracks but intense ones. Some people may also say that this experimental side is influenced by Krautrock and bands as Neu!. It’s not impossible that they can find a place in this niche of rock market.

French Films - Imaginary Future

Pas besoin d’être de Californie pour faire du surf rock. Le groupe French Films l’a très bien compris et nous le montre avec son premier album, Imaginary Future disponible depuis aujourd’hui. 

Comme le nom l’indique, Antti, Joni, Santtu, Mikael & Johannes sont finlandais, mais cela ne change rien, il produise un rock entraînant avec des guitares accrocheuses et des basses dansantes. Vous aviez déjà pu les découvrir grâce à leur excellent premier EP Golden Sea. 

Plutôt court, Imaginary Future s’écoute d’une traite. On trouve toujours autant de fougue et d’émotions dans les chansons. On retient facilement les refrains et on tape du pied sans relâche sur ces minis tubes estivaux (un peu retard). 

Avec moins de naïveté et plus de créativité que The Drums, French Films méritent d’être connus.

No need to come from California to make Surf rock. The band French Films has understood it really well and shows it to us with their first album Imaginary Future, available since today. 

As their name indicates it, Antti, Joni, Santtu, Mikael & Johannes are from Finland, but it doesn’t change anything, they produce a highly stimulating rock with catchy guitars and dancing basses. You could have discovered them with their first EP Golden Sea, a very nice try. 

Imaginary Future is quite short and you can easily listen to the album in one go. Their songs are still full of emotions even if there is maybe a stronger pop side with more keyboards. It’s easy to remember lyrics, and to shake your head, on theses mini summer hits (too late maybe). 

With less naivety and more noise and creativity than The Drums, French Films deserve to be known.

Mujuice - Downshifting

Petit coup de pub aujourd’hui pour Mujuice, un jeune et talentueux artiste moscovite. Assez connu dans son pays Roma Litvinov propose une musique électronique assez sensible notamment grâce aux textes chantés en russe. Certes, difficilement compréhensible, la voix est agréable, et le chanteur ne se pli pas aux exigences commerciales qui le ferait chanter dans la langue de Mickey.


Downshifting, son dernier album a reçu d’excellentes critiques en Russie et ailleurs et on comprend facilement pourquoi en l’écoutant. On découvre de très bon titre comme Обещания (Promesses) ou Юность (Jeunesse). N’hésitez pas à être curieux !

Today, we introduce you, Mujuice, a young and talented artist coming from Moscow. Quite well known in his country, Roma Litvinov offers a sensitive electronic music thanks to his texts sung in Russian. Of course, it’s difficult to understand, but the voice is pleasant, and the singer does not fold the commercial requirements that ask to sing in the language of Mickey. 

Downshifting, his latest album  has received excellent reviews in Russia and elsewhere, and we easily understand why by listening to it. We can discover nice songs as Обещания (Promises) or Юность (Youth). Feel free to be curious!

Theme Park - A Mountain We Love / Wax

Il ne se passe pas que de mauvaises choses à la rentrée, en témoigne le nouvel EP du groupe Theme Park. A la croisée de MGMT pour le coté electro, des Drums pour côté cool et naïf surfrock, les Londoniens proposent une musique posée et volontaire qui nous donne envie de sifflouter en souriant à la vie.

Le quatre jeunes anglais, qui se réclament volontiers de LCD soundsystem et des Talking Heads, nous offrent deux titres qui ont chacuns une approche différente. Wax, le plus intimiste, utilise un rythme et une ligne de basse vintage sur lequels les voix sont mises en valeurs. A Mountain We Love est plus punchy et plus ouvert aux expérimentations electro.

On souhaite en tout cas au groupe de confirmer tout ça avec un album dans les prochains mois!

Everthing is not black in September. This is what we think listen to the Theme Park double single. Looking like MGMT for the electro sounds or the drums for the cool and naive surf-rock style, the Londoners offer a chill and voluntary music that invite us to whistle and to smile to our life.

The four young British, that like to refer to LCD soundsystem and the Talking Heads propose two songs that both have their own approach. Wax is more intimist and uses vintage bassline and drums that highlight the singers. A Mountain We Love is more punchy and open to electro experiences.

We hope they will confirm this with an album soon!

Neon Indian - Era Extraña

La musique de Neon Indian est un peu un savant mélange entre la naïveté de la chillwave et le mystère ou la folie de l’électro retro futuriste. Le groupe mené par le jeune Alan Palomo se crée ainsi son propre univers. 

Le deuxième album Era Extraña vient de sortir, et bien que l’ensemble soit homogène et agréable, il n’y a véritablement qu’un seul titre qui ressort : Polish Girl, le reste n’est pas inoubliable. Mais en live, cela semble plutôt prometteur comme ici.

Mais on vous invite surtout à découvrir le merveilleux clip réalisé par Tim Nackashi. Beaucoup de travail et d’effets mais le résultat est excellent et l’atmosphère colle parfaitement au titre.

Neon Indian’s music is a clever mix between the naivety of chillwave and the mystery of the retro-futurist electronic music. The band, lead by the young Alan Palomo still continues to build its own universe, they just released their second album Era Extraña. The set is homogeneous, but truly, there is just one track which is noteworthy: Polish Girl. 

We recommande you over all to have a look at the video clip directed by Tim Nackashi. A lot of work and effects for an excellent result. The atmosphere fits perfectly to the song.

Après CSS, les brésiliens frappent encore. Le 19 septembre, c'est Database, acteurs incontournable de la scène electro latino qui sortent un EP si bien nommé New Disco. Si seul un minimix est dispo, tout ça s'annonce pas mal: Les sons club s'allient avec des samples groovy vintages. Tout ce qu'il faut pour danser!

En attendant, le jour J, on vous fait profiter de leur dernier remix: une reprise du dernier album de Mark Ronson, retro a souhait, soupoudré de techno endiablé qui vous fera au moins opiner de la tête! Décidemmennt on a le sang chaud de l'autre côté de l'Atlantique...

After CSS, The Bresilian did it again. On the 19th, Database, a major player on the Latin electro scene releasesa well-named EP: New Disco. Only a minimix is currently available but it looks quite good: Club sounds are mixed with groovy vintage samples. There is everything we need to dance!

To help you to wait til the D day, here is their last remix: it is from the last release of Mark Ronson, deliciously retro, with crazy techno over that. Your head will shake. They definitely now hoiw to get mad on the other side of the Atlantique!

Cult Image / Retriever - Split 7" Single

Aujourd’hui on vous propose deux groupe d’outre manche: Cult Image et Retriever. Pourquoi deux ? Parce qu’ils partagent ensemble un split single, sortie sur le label Splash One il y a deux jours et aussi parcequ'on est plutôt altruiste. 

Le premier groupe, Cult Image est peut être le plus intéressant. Dans un pure style indie rock, les quatre amis joue une sorte de mix 80’s de The Smiths et Jesus & The Mary Chain. On aime la texture de la bass et la certaine nonchalance dans la voix du chanteur. 

Retriever, vient aussi de Newcastle, le groupe propose un rock plus sombre, où la voix de la chanteuse se noie dans les nombreuses distorsions. Leur son est différent, plus agressive et prenant certainement une autre dimension en live.

Today we introduce you two bands coming from England: Cult Image and Retriever. Why two bands? Because they are sharing a split single, available since last week on the English label Splash One. 

The first one, Cult Image is maybe the most interesting. In a traditional indie rock style, the band plays a kind of 80’s mix of The Smiths and Jesus & The Mary Chain. We like the texture of the bass and the nonchalance in the voice of the singer. 

Retriever, also coming from Newcastle is making a dark rock full of distortion. Their sound is different, more aggressive and definitely done for the stage.

Midnight Magic - What The Eyes Can't See

Décidemment, on donnne dans la magie en ce moment! Après le titre de The Magician, c'est l'ensemble disco funk Midnight Magic qui vient de sortir son Debut EP, What the Eyes Can't See. Les 9 New-Yorkais de Brooklin nous font redecouvrir le bon vieux groove des années 70-80, cuivres et lignes de basses en tête. Ils s'étaient déjà fait remarquer il y a un peu plus d'un an avec le titre Beam me up.

Le tout est kitsch à souhait, les sons sont fidèles et surtout le timbre de la chanteuse exceptionnel ce qui en rend l'écoute vraiment agréable. Bon, il y a quelques longeurs et l'EP manque peut-être un peu d'originalité mais le plaisir de renouer avec le Disco et la générosité du groupe, qui nous offrent les titres en téléchargement gratuit, compensent largement.

At Vocododo we definitely decided to deal with magic! After the Magician's song, here is the Disco funk band Midnight Magic that is releasing its Debut EP, What the Eyes Can't See. The 9 New-Yorkers from Brooklin play good old Groove from the 70's-80's with pleasant Trumpets and Basslines. They have already been noticed last year with the Beam me up that have been remixed several times.

The result is Kitsch, sounds are reliable and the voice of the singer is particularly astonishing. All these points make the release really pleasant to listen. Ok, there are some longs and the EP could have been a bit more original. But in fact it is so so enjoyable to discover disco again and the songs can be downloaded for free!

Aujourd'hui: Une chanson, trois remix, voici le nouvelle EP de Kamp!.

Ce groupe, en provenance de Pologne nous offre une bonne dose d’électro disco. Cairo, seul titre original, ne vous laissera pas indifférent. Apres une lente montée en puissance, des légers arpèges de guitares viennent se mélanger au beat 80’s et aux chœurs, que du bonheur !

Le label portugais Discotexas a demandé à Moullinex de remixer le titre et le résultat est tout aussi agréable. Cela devrait vous rapeller l'époque ou l'artiste faisait des mix plus punchy. JBAG et Social Disco Club ont aussi bidouller le titre, et le dernier remix propose une version presque folk de Cairo.

Today: One song, three remix, this is the new EP of Kamp!.

This band,coming from Poland create an efficient electro disco music. The original song Cairo should give you a strong dose of groove. After a nice slow rise, 80's beats come supporting a sweet guitar, enjoy!

The portugese label Discotexas asked to Moullinex to remix the track and the result is also great. It may remind you the time when the artist was making punchier song. At last Social Disco Club give almost an interesting folk version of the song.

The Magician feat. Jeppe - I don’t know what to do



On resentait déjà ça en écoutant ses Magic Tapes mais c'est vrai qu'il y a quelque chose de surnaturel dans la musique de The Magician...  On a du mal a expliquer l'alchimie qui s'opère. Est-ce le son résolument groovy? le retour aux bonnes vieilles methodes Dance, les sons electro bruts et décomplexés? En tout cas, le label Kitsuné ne s'est pas trompé en le prenant sous son aile.

Une de ses première compos à son nom, I don't know what to do, porte plutôt mal son nom... à grand coup d'arpèges et synthés 80's le magicien sort sa baguette magique, ressucite la cassette audio et nous entraine irresistiblement vers la piste de dance. Si seulement Harry Potter avait des pouvoirs aussi stylés!

Le titre devrait figurer sur le prochain EP de l'artiste prévu pour Octobre.

We've already felt that listening to his Tapes but it is obvious that there is some magic in The Magician's music. It is difficult to explain how it operates. Is it the groovy lines? Is it the good old Dance methods, the raw and unhibited electro riffs? Anyway, Kitsuné wasn't mistaken when they signed him!

One of his first personal composition, I don't know what to do, doesn't really have the right name... Helped with 80's synthetizers and arpeggios, the Magician cast us spells that resurect the Audi tape and lead us to the dancefloor at the same time... We wish Harry Potter could have such stylish powers!

A new EP should be released in October.

Stoner Showers / Abadabad - Makeout Beach

La fin de l’été se rapproche, mais si vous trouvez un petit coin ensoleillé pour faire une sieste, n’hésitez pas à écouter le denier EP que se partagent Abadabad et Stoner Showers. Makeout Beach porte bien son nom, et on peut dire que c’est l’archétype de l’album de chillwave, doux, rêveur et simple. On ne demande rien de spéciale à ces deux groupes, mais il caresse leur instrument, offrant d’agréable vague mélodique qui se mélange aux voix bourré d’effets apaisant. 

Tout les deux de Brooklyn, ils ont signé chez le bien nommé label Chill Mega Chill, label qui offre la possibilité de découvrir une multitude d’artiste du même genre sur son site et qui ne produit pas de cd ou de vinyles, mais seulement des cassettes audio.  

Au fait, on a une petite préférence pour Stoner Showers.

The end of the summer is coming, but if you find a nice sunny place for a nap don’t hesitate to listen to this split EP Abadabad and Stoner Showers. Makeout Beach is the Archetype of the chillwave album, simple, soft, dreamy. We don’t ask something special to these two bands, but they just stroke their instrument, giving nice melodic wave which mix with voices full of effects. 

Both from Brooklyn, they are at Chill Mega Chill Records, an aptly named label witch give the opportunity to discover other nice artists of the same kind. Don't try to find cds, they sell only audio tape.

Oh, and by the way, we have a little preference for Stoner Showers.

Ladytron - Gravity The Seducer

On attendait le prochain album de Ladytron pour le 12 septembre prochain mais les anglais ont déjà dévoilé aujourd’hui 6 titres de Gravity The Seducer. Cet album, très attendu, avait déjà été précédé par deux singles: White Elephant et Mirage. 

Et ces derniers extraits confirment la nouvelle direction et l’ambiance de ce nouvel opus. Comme Reuben Wu, membre du groupe le dit dans une interview, il ne sonne pas comme son prédécesseur, Velocifero, sortie en 2008. On ne peut pas dire le contraire, c’est plus rêveur, plus aérien et surtout moins dance floor. Mais les ingrédients qui ont permis le succès du groupe sont là, la voie d’Helen Marnie est toujours aussi envoûtante et les titres sont agréables. Espérons que l’époque de Destroy Everything You Touch ne vous manquera pas trop.

We were waiting for the forthcoming album of Ladytron the next 12th of September, but the English band has already revealed today 6 tracks of the forthcoming Gravity The Seducer. The highly anticipated album was already preceded by the two first singles: White Elephant and Mirage.

We can say it’s true, dreamier, and spacier; it’s difficult to find song for the dance floor. But there are still the same ingredients, as the voice of Helen Marnie for example, which permit to the band to reach the success. So, nice tracks, but maybe you will miss the old time of Destroy Everything You Touch.
